Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon: April 2020

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon is a readathon hosted over at 24hourreadathon.com, where readers challenge themselves to read for 24 hours. You can find out more info on their FAQ Page.

Hello everyone! I decided to join in on this readathon at the last minute, and I’m not sure how much reading time I’ll actually have, but we’ll see! Good luck to everyone!

Opening Survey

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Washington State

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I’m not sure. I’m already reading The Walking Dead Compendium Two, and listening to Tell Me Lies, but I really don’t know what my next read after that will be. But whatever I choose, I feel like that’s the one one I’m most looking forward to. If that makes sense?

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
I always forget the snacks! Granted, this time, I signed up at the last minute. But I think we have some good snacks in the house already: lots of fruits and cheese and some candy too.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
I’ve had this blog for 8 years, and I really want to get back into blogging! It’s very hard to find the time though. But hopefully I can get back into it at least a little bit!

5) If you participated in the last readathon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first readathon, what are you most looking forward to?
I didn’t participate in the last one, but I have participated in several in the past. I’m just going to try to read as much as possible this time, but I have kids and a wife who might take up a lot of my time today, too.

Updates

Hours 1-6

Titles of Books Read During This Period: The Walking Dead Compendium Two
Thoughts on Current Read: I finished Volume 11 in The Walking Dead Compendium Two, and started Volume 12. Not much in the way of thoughts, since this is a reread for me. But some crazy parts!
Number of Books Read So Far: 1
Pages Read During This Period: 82
Total Pages Read So Far: 82
Amount of Time Spent Reading During This Period: 35 minutes
Total Amount of Time Spent Reading So Far: 35 minutes
Notes: Readathon starts at 5am my time, so I didn’t fully wake up until the beginning of hour 4, and then I worked on this post during hour 5, then made and ate breakfast. I didn’t really start reading until hour 6.

Hours 7-12

Titles of Books Read During This Period: Finished Volumes 12-14 and started Volume 15 in The Walking Dead, Compendium Two
Thoughts on Current Read: The comics are good, but I love the show even more. Still a reread for me so I don’t have much else to say.

Pages Read During This Period: 402
Total Pages Read So Far: 484
Amount of Time Spent Reading During This Period: 3 hours
Total Amount of Time Spent Reading So Far: 3 hours, 35 minutes
Notes: During these hours, I not only read, but also showered, ate lunch, spent some time with my family, had a snack, and did some yoga.

Mid-Event Survey

(I’m not sure if they’re doing this survey this time, but I’m going to go ahead and answer the questions. It’s a survey they’ve done in the past and I just kept it on my readathon template.)

1. What are you reading right now?
The Walking Dead, Compendium Two.

2. How many books have you read so far?
I’ve finished Volumes 11-14 of The Walking Dead, Compendium Two, and started Volume 15. Volume 16 is the last one in this compendium.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
I’d like to start a new book. I’d love to finish TWD Compendium Two, but I’d really like to start a new book also, like maybe Crier’s War or Wilder Girls. I’d also like to spend some time listening to Tell Me Lies, my current audiobook.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
My family has been pretty great with letting me read uninterrupted! My wife has even been bringing me snacks! But here in a few minutes I’m going to take a reading break and spend some more time with them for a few hours.

5. What surprises you most about the Readathon, so far?
Nothing really surprises me about readathon anymore, since this is like my 11th one or something. But I never fail to be a bit sad about how slow I read. I’ve only been reading comics so far this time so I’ve definitely been getting a lot more pages than I would if I was reading a regular book, but I’m still pretty slow.

Mini Challenges

All I participated in was the Opening Survey, Mid-Event Survey, and Closing Survey.

Other Participants I’ve Visited

I did look at and love a lot of #readathon posts on Instagram, and tweeted a bit, but other than that I didn’t really visit or interact with many other participants this time.

Closing Survey

1. How would you assess your reading overall?
I am glad I finished The Walking Dead, Compendium Two (it’s a big one!), but I wish I had listened to my audiobook some, and I also wish I had started another physical book.

2. Did you have a strategy, and if so, did you stick to it?
My only strategy this time was to read as much as I could while my family would let me. They were pretty good at letting me be off in my room reading most of the day. I also was planning on listening to some of my audiobook and painting while my younger son napped but he ended up taking a shorter nap so I wasn’t able to do that.

3. What was your favorite snack?
My wife brought a tray of cheese, crackers, and fruit to me at one point, and that was great! I wasn’t expecting it so it was really cool!

4. Wanna volunteer for our next event?
That depends on when it is, and if I have my kids that weekend. If I don’t have them, then yes, I might be able to volunteer!

How did everyone’s readathon go? Did you get as much reading done as you wanted to? I have a feeling this time around was a lot harder for everyone, with all that’s going on right now. But hopefully everyone was able to find a bit of time to escape reality, at least for a little while!
