Where we got it: Purchased it from a store long ago

Moo moo! Hoo hoo! Cock-a-doodle-doo! Oh, the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do. Now see if you can do them too! This fabulous book is ideal for teaching young children all about noises! (Cover and synopsis from Goodreads.)

First Thoughts…

The kiddo picks out the book, and we read it together. He makes sure that I know that he will read one page, and I will read the next, but he will make all the noises.

Me: So what is this book about?

Kiddo: Um, it’s about Mr. Brown making noises. Animal noises.

Me: But it’s not just animal noises, right?

Kiddo: No, he makes door noises and clock noises and lightning noises and butterfly noises. And last but not least, he makes fish noises.

Me: Fish noises? He does?

Kiddo: No, actually he doesn’t.

The kiddo then goes on to tell me to write down a whole bunch of words from the book, and he spells them out for me. I have no idea why he makes me write them down.

A Bit More Detail…Me: Let’s get back to the story. What was your favorite part?

Kiddo: Um, my favorite part is when he makes the lightning noise.

Me: Why is that your favorite part?

Kiddo: Because I like lightning, and I’m not scared when it’s lightning outside. And I’m not scared of anything.

Me: You’re not scared of anything?

Kiddo: Nope.

Me: What’s your least favorite part?

Kiddo: The “buzz buzz” part because I don’t really like bees.

Final Thoughts…

Kiddo: And for my stars (that’s what he calls it when he gives it a star rating) I would give it a 99.

Me: 99? Out of what? 100?

Kiddo: Yeah. 99 out of 100. What does “out of 100” mean?

Me: It means, like, you can only go up to 100.

Kiddo: Oh, okay.

Me: Anything else? You like saying the noise parts, right?

Kiddo: Yeah, I do. I do, indeed.

The Verdict…

The copy that we have of Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? is a board book meant for babies. And while I think there might be some books that are more suited to the kiddo’s age group and reading level, I think some of these books are still good for him to practice his reading with.

The kiddo gave the book 99/100 stars, and for the both of us, I’m going to give it:

4 stars. Dr. Seuss books are fun for kids of any age, and although this is geared more towards kids younger than my son, he still has fun reading the book and saying all the fun sounds.
