If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. He’ll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn’t have a milk mustache, and then he’ll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim….
The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book. (Cover and synopsis from Goodreads.)
First Thoughts…
Kiddo: “You have to say the title like this, shaking your finger while you say it. Like they did something bad.”
Me: “Okay.”
We read the book together.
Me: “So what was the book about?”
Kiddo: “A little kid giving a mouse a cookie.”
A Bit More Detail…
Kiddo “reads” the book to me (he’s still learning to read), and skips some parts.
Me: “What’s your favorite part?”
Kiddo: “When he looks funny in the mirror. And the part that I don’t like…let’s see… Uh, when he’s giving him the cookie.”
Me: “Really? That’s, like, the whole plot of the book.”
Kiddo: (looks at me like I’m crazy)
Me: “Why don’t you like that part?”
Kiddo: “Because I don’t really like the cookie bag. I like the cookies, but I just don’t really like the bag.”
Me: “Ohhhh.”
Kiddo: “Yeah. The part that I kind of like is when he’s taking a nap.”
Me: “Yeah, naps are fun.”
Final Thoughts…
Kiddo: “I like that book…infinity. And, like, beyond.”
Me: “So you’d give it 5 stars?”
Kiddo: “Um, plus 4 more? 5 plus 4…” (counts on fingers) “9. 9 stars.”
Me: “Did you like the drawings?”
Kiddo: “Yeah. You can give it 3 stars for that.”
