TypeCasting (1): Daughter of Smoke & Bone
TypeCasting is my brand new feature here at The Overstuffed Bookcase, where I cast a few actors as the main characters in books that I’d like to see adapted into movies.

I recently read and loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor. Apparently Daughter has been optioned as a movie, so I’m very excited to see who they choose for the cast!
And let me just say, these are not easy posts to write. I waaaaay overthink these things and I’m never completely happy with my picks. So take it a little easy on me, okay? ;)
So here are my picks for actors as the main characters of Daughter of Smoke & Bone:
Karou
My pick: Odeya Rush
Okay, so I’ve never seen her in anything, so I don’t know her acting abilities, but she’s around the right age and she just looks like she could be Karou to me. Plus, she’d be a lesser-known actress and it seems like a lot of movies are going for that these days.
Akiva
My pick: (Someone like) Jensen Ackles
Jensen is obviously too old to play Akiva. I mean, Akiva is old but I’m pretty sure he stopped aging at around 20 or something so he should look younger. But I just really can’t picture Akiva as anyone else. I’m not sure if it’s because of his role on Supernatural or what, but I can totally picture him with wings!
Brimstone
My pick: Jason Isaacs
I really wanted kind of a larger guy to play Brimstone, but I wasn’t able to find the kind of guy I was picturing in my head. But I love Jason Isaacs and I think he would suit the role of Brimstone well. Isaacs is so good at portraying bad guys, and I think he would do well with the stern side of Brimstone, but I think he could also hint at that softer side that loves Karou. I picture him with lots of makeup and horns, kinda Hellboy-ish.
Zuzana
My pick: Jordan Hinson
Believe it or not, this was probably the hardest one for me, simply because I LOVE Zuzana. She is seriously my favorite character in this series and I really don’t know who could do her justice. So once again, I’ve picked someone who looks the part to me, but I’m not sure of her acting ability.
I’m sure I’ll come up with better options later–it’s just so hard but I know there are plenty of other great actors out there that could play these characters. What do you guys think? Let me know who you could see in these roles!

January 26, 2013 at 2:35 amI think the actresses you picked for Karou and Zuzana definitely fit the physical picture I have for the characters, although like you I haven't seen them act in anything. Jensen Ackles is pretty much right for any role. Jason Isaacs can play anything as well, but I picture Brimstone more as Lenny Kravitz… I don't know why.

January 27, 2013 at 6:15 pmI thought it was funny that you said you pictured Brimstone as Hellboyish because as I was reading that paragraph I was thinking to myself "what about that Ron guy who played Hellboy?"
